The Buena Onda Project

Punta Colonet is a small town in Baja Mexico of approximately 4000 people. Located just a few miles from the ocean, the town used to be a fishing village. Now the majority of people in Colonet work in fields picking tomatoes, onions, and peppers for $1.50 an hr.

In Mid September, I had the opportunity to travel down the coast of Baja with Ob beans to the small town to document and help the Buena Onda project. The mission of the project is to both strengthen and empower families and to strategically invest in its emerging generation. The non-profit is mainly doing this through the construction of a community center in the heart of the town.

Our trip was divided into three parts, exploring the town of Colonet, working on the project, and surfing. Flip through the galleries below to learn more about the project, and see how you can help!

The Buena Onda project started off with 4 main cabins and a shower house allowing groups, like ob beans, to come down and help for longer trips. After those were constructed the focus was on building the community center, which has the frame of the first floor built and the second coming soon. This main facility will house offices, storage, a commercial kitchen, classrooms, a cafeteria, a gathering space, a library, and apartments for staff. During this trip, the OB Beans crew worked on cleaning up the project, Painting, and building shelves for the kitchen.

There are two great surf spots close to town. After work we hit the waves
